JET!

JET! from Erin D. Garcia punctuates a crucial moment in the artist’s research. So far, the technical practices of studio painting have had little overlap with that of large scale murals, and these two aspects of Garcia’s work have developed in parallel. But this collection is where these respective methods converge.
Those familiar with Garcia’s previous works will note that Jet builds incrementally on fundamentals he’s been steadily establishing. Elements cast in brilliant gradients with sensuous textures recall his signature. But beyond a casual look, this collection makes a daring move in two different dimensions. The pieces are simultaneously deeper and more expansive.

Garcia’s work is meticulous, yes. But there is a sense that this eye for detail is paired with a commitment to constraints. In scaling up the work physically, his needs have moved beyond commercially available brushes and he’s had to build bigger ones. These handmade tools come with their own artifacts and imperfections, allowing close viewers to feel the artist’s presence in the work.
